Derbyshire School needs new metal barriers
Younsters from a school in Ripley, Derbyshire have been scooting safely after taking part in a new scheme to promote safer and healthier ways to travel.
The pupils at Ripley Infants School were trained by members of Derbyshire County Council’s sustainable travel team to use scooters to ride to school.
Headteacher Tracy Gannon said the scheme was part of a bigger plan to improve safety after the road outside the school, which is situated in a cul-de-sac. She said: “The road has become dangerous. There have been no accidents yet, but we have had some near misses, with people parking on the pavements and not looking when they go to reverse.”
The school is also working with the police to try and get metal barrier put up outside the venue for additional safety.

A38 Safety barriers in Gloucestershire could be proving dangerous
It has been claimed that safety barriers built in the middle of the A38 to protect people crossing the busy road in Alveston, South Gloucestershire have been deemed a “death trap” for cars and cyclists.
The safety barriers built in concrete islands were constructed in November as a traffic barrier following a couple of incidents involving pedestrians.
However, since the construction, there have been at least four car accidents at the junction.
A council spokesman said: “Following feedback we received about the scheme, some minor modifications have been carried out to the central pedestrian island”
“We will continue to monitor this junction.”

Staffordshire crossroads set for new safety barriers
Safety improvements are planned at a busy crossroads in Staffordshire after a series of accidents in the same area.
Highways officers are planning to install safety barriers at the junction of Sneyd Street, Hanley Road and Milton Road, in Sneyd Green.
Hairdresser Emma Anderson, who owns The Mulberry Bush Hair Salon, had barriers installed outside her business following safety concerns. The 36-year-old said: “We approached the city council for barriers because our salon is so close to the road. Since we had them installed they have been hit.”
The improvements are included in the £3.7 million programme of more than 70 transport projects agreed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Westbound carriageway of M4 closed for upgrade on safety barriers
The westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 5 and 6 will closed overnight for major repairs and improvements.
The closure, due to major maintenance work, will last from 10pm to 5.30am.
This is part of a major maintenance scheme which includes the upgrade and extension of the M4 motorway safety barriers and drainage system improvements.
Road users are advised to check conditions before they set out, as well as leaving extra time for their journeys.

Cyclists call for safety barriers on roads
Cyclists across cities such as London and Sheffield are calling for more barriers to be installed to increase safety on public roads.
After a series of accidents on Britain’s roads, cycling groups are demanding the introduction of safety barriers.
There have also been calls for more designated cycling lanes to prevent more accidents from occurring.
